An intensely personal book, Vivian Foster Gilman charts a path through feeling and intuition leading to nowhere in particular. The volume compiles images saved through the years, standing still in time, and composes relations with a sensitivity to presence and absence. A reflection on image making in general, as much as it is also a framing of particular images, this book is the result of a contemplative process asking questions about what lasts, presence, and one’s inner life.

Entirely handmade with extensive hand collation, this book is a work in itself. Through a collaborative and intuitive process involving manipulations of paper including printing, folding, rolling, and stacking, new images and forms were created that speak to the ways in which inward instincts can be made physical. Each individual book is completely unique and made with the utmost care, signed by the artist.

Artist Statement

Vivian Gilman is the name of my favorite teacher. Winnie Foster is in a book she read aloud and I later read to my students. And Winnifred Gilman is a plant, native to my area. This book is dedicated to them all, with love. — Alicia Cheatham
