29 Glasses
Erin Wright
$25

This book sits at the end of a long thread which started as an investigation into transparency and reflection and the ways in which it is rendered in pictorial space. Selected from a large number of compositions, the 29 images contained in this book indeed do depict what could be considered studies for rendering reflection, but they also hold curious philosophical content as well. Impossible collisions of glasses, taken from Wright’s collection, occupy grainy, greenish-blue voids and seem to float in negative space. The glasses are empty, but they contain one another, in-forming and holding. Their reflective surfaces glimmer and commingle, deep punctuations of blue, green, and black describing depth and thickness.

A rube-goldberg type process steered the way to these compositions. Images of glasses were translated through several layers of representation before landing in this book. They started as prints on classroom transparencies, which were then layered and scanned. Slight variations in the position or rotation of the slides lead to quirks that resonated further after being printed on a risograph machine via CMYK separations, and those are shown here.
